New Blood Angels TV series reveals NAVY designs!

Unless you've been living in a cave the last few months, and frankly thanks to Corona many of you probably have been; albeit WITH access to the internet- you will know about the exciting and oh so stylish new official Warhammer 40,000 TV series "Angels of Death".

What is really exciting is that one of the main characters is a female Naval Captain of a Space Marines vessel. While she and her personnel are clearly "BLOOD THRALLS" and part of the Chapter; not actually Imperial Navy per se, they certainly dress like your standard Naval officers. In fact, concept art sketches for her character have circulated online, drawn by Jez Goodwin the concept sketch is absolutely current- 2019, and it's almost exactly the same as his original Imperial Navy officer sketches from the early '90s!!! What this means is that all the material on this blog is still absolutely valid and still relevant for now and for future releases and lore. Furthermore, the little extra details on the new character ("Livia Sorken") show fascinating features we can assume are also intended to be part of Imperial Navy lore. Check this out!

And now compare that with the original Jez Goodwin Imperial Navy sketches:

SO WHAT'S NEW IN GOODWIN'S DESIGNS? Well, first off- what's the same? The most obvious continuity with the original designs is the Void-Helm collar seen on Jez's Navy crewmen sketch. Jez describes this as like a 'diving bell' seen on Victorian deep-sea divers. What's really cool is that he has also kept both the Officer's cutlass and the odd idea of a "Shield Generator" jeweled vambrace on the left wrist. In the original sketch, he goes into some detail to underline that this is carried by all officers and gives a directional forcefield, particularly a feature of his concept that officers are really into their dueling with cutlass and/or bolt-pistol. Indeed, Jez's 'short magazine' bolt-pistol is also part of Sorken's kit. It makes you kind of jealous that the only Navy miniature on the WH40K tabletop, the Officer of the Fleet regimental advisor for the Imperial Guard doesn't have a 'refractor field' type save nor a bolt pistol instead of his shitty laspistol. Sorken also the officer's sash and heavy utility belt as in the original designs, as well as her uniform itself. What really has a new twist is seeing an officer's void-helm, and the little note that she has a voidsuit beneath her uniform, she also sports some heavy-duty magnetic boots which differ from the Officer of the Fleet model and the original officer sketch which has what Jez calls "heavy black jackboots". So, basically, there isn't really much that is new- what Sorken's kit reveals is a mix of the Naval crewman gear and the classic officer, Sorken is an all-action character, not just a deck aristocrat. What else can you spot? Let us know!

Livia Sorken joins the ranks of the many inspirational Navy characters from WH40K lore such as Lord Admiral Cornelius von Ravensburg, Captain Spire, Wing Commander Korten Barasath, Flag-Captain Leoten Semper and the cast of the Phantine Air Corps. Keep your eyes open for an article here going into depth and detail about your favourite Navy characters in the near future.
