The Navy's very own game!

Aeronautica Imperialis is a new Games Workshop game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, with models in a scale all of its own. This new game is all about air combat- flyer versus flyer, and the game is named after the Imperial Navy itself!

That said, so far, there are only two Imperial Naval aircraft available- the Marauder bomber and the Thunderbolt, albeit with two versions of each one. You are already familiar with the Marauder variant- the Marauder Destroyer- from WH40K, but now GW introduces a new variant of the Thunderbolt Heavy Fighter: the Thunderbolt Fury. This flying tank packs two Avenger bolt cannons instead of the quad autocannons of the standard Thunderbolt.

Why GW felt the need to create a new aircraft, especially since there is already a Naval aircraft called the Fury (Interceptor) is up for debate. Nonetheless, this is still good stuff for you Navy fans, there is a bit of new lore and artwork in the rulebooks which are worth looking at, but unless you have AI players at your local store, this game might not....take off.

The Thunderbolt Fury bodes well for future developments of navy models in proper WH40K however, two Avenger bolt cannons would give players some serious firepower, by current rules that would let the Thunderbolt put out 16X strength 6 AP -2 shots! That compares to the current Thunderbolt load-out of 8X Strength 7 AP -1 shots.

What's perhaps most exciting is that we now have a new logo for the Navy, presumably GW is moving in the direction that the Aeronautica is not the Gothic name for "Imperial Navy" but rather its atmospheric branch, either way it's more lore for the greatest Imperial faction there is(n't) (YET)... the Navy!
