GUESTLIST: Patric Owen Thomas's Navy
"Guestlist" is a new series for the blog highlighting the work and dreams of Navy fans who are putting boots on the ground and playing the Imperial Navy on the tabletop. The series will be a great source of inspiration for you dear readers, there is no right or wrong way to do it and you'll see all kinds of thought processes, takes on the lore, and arguments for what the Navy can do on the battlefield!
So here's our first officer on deck: Patric Owen Thomas from California! What Naval Command really likes about his army (navy?) is the choice of models! The Horus Heresy Solar Auxilia and the Rogue Trader Elucidian Starstriders make a perfect match, with the Elucidians standing for officers and NCOs, they fit pretty seamlessly into the ForgeWorld sets. Good work! A very nice Navy blue paint scheme ties it all together.
Even though we still mourn the loss of the Elysium drop troops we live in a golden age of models to build an Imperial Navy army. For those that are looking in to making your own army in this flavor lets go through the models you will be looking for.
HQ With 3 rogue traders and the Lord Marshal of a Solar Auxilia, this should take care of all of your Naval “Admirals”
Troops While the voidsmen of the Rogue Trader box are the best you can go for personally I feel that the Solar Auxilia Lasrifle troops are a perfect feel of the navy. With fully encased suits from a distance it will be hard to tell them from the Rogue Trader voidsmen. I run Solar Auxilia Lasrifle as my basic trooper and the Voidsmen as Sergeants and Scions.
Elites Astropaths luckily have a great new model as well. Command Squads can easily be built from the medics of the Rogue Trader box, as well as the Solar Auxilia Command set. The Tech Priest also from the Rogue Trader box helps out with that. Officer of the Fleet’s model works perfectly as well.
Fast Attack This is where things get a bit rough, with the classic loader Sentinels being out of print going in to something more unusual is the path I took. Archmagos Draykavac is standing on a moving platform that would look perfect in any ship of the Imperium and is the perfect size replacement for any model of Sentinel.
Heavy Support A Malacdor Infernus, was originally designed to clean out the engines of the major ships of the Imperial Navy and is a great flavor addition. To get around the problem of the lack of heavy weapons teams I would recommend buying a Space Marine Rapier Quad Mortar. The Mortar itself does not need to be glued down and any heavy weapon can be put in its place. Most other tanks also are perfectly fine for flavor as you have to imagine that they could just have removed a gun on the side of the ship and put it on a normal tank platform.
Flyers The Aquila Lander is a must have, it’s a transport that will give your army a lot more flavor then just using the Valkyries commonly see. My second choice would be the Lightning Strike Fighter, but there is really no wrong choices in the Flyer section.
Dedicated Transport I think the Aquila Landers is where most of your points for transports should go, but it can be hard pressed to make list without any Chimera.
Using these guidelines this is the starting point I would be building my Imperial Navy army.
