Rogue Trader 2018

Wow! No one saw this one coming. A new board game called Rogue Trader was showcased very very briefly on YouTube's Warhammer community TV yesterday. Featuring some cheesy disco and cheeky classic misspelling "rouge trader", the teaser flashed a few still images that a few of us fans were quick enough to screenshot before Games Workshop took the teaser down. What is exciting and relevant for this blog is the fact that it resembles the old Space Hulk type games as well as new infantry models that have more than a passing resemblance to the classic Navy Infantry in Warhammer 40,000 lore.
Of course, the Rogue Trader is a naval captain in his own right, but the images show the direction the design team is moving. The gothic baroque armour and Imperial designs is reminiscent of what we've already seen in the redux Storm Troopers (Militarum Tempestus) which returned a few years ago, and more specifically like the golden armour of the new Custodes range.
It seems as though one of the characters is a kind of master-at-arms (Sgt HARKER if you will) carrying a gatling gun of sorts. Note that the cap is something we've never seen before and is extremely similar to one of my own suggested images that this blog carried for years which was in fact a repost of a Russian soldier from a rival sci-fi miniature range. Anyway, who knows where the GW design team got the idea.
The standard infantry have lasguns, but the captain or officer (the Rogue Trader?) sports a cool shotgun. Another Imperial model is an Adeptus Mechanicus engineer or technician of some kind, with a nice nod to the original WH40K game which went under the name of Rogue Trader. The miniature has a 60s sci-fi feel to it, but the shoulder armour resembles the classic "diving bell" deep sea diver helmets we see in Jez Goodwin's old sketches for the Navy Infantry.
Another step closer to an actual Navy Infantry range of models? Maybe. For now, my money is on these guys: (but more about them in future).
